FAQs

  • Support Coordination (SC) is a capacity-building support designed to help you connect with NDIS providers, community resources, mainstream services, and other government programs. Essentially, it assists you in linking with services to achieve your NDIS goals.

The role of Support Coordination includes:

    • Helping you understand your NDIS plan.

    • Assisting in navigating NDIS pathways and processes.

    • Providing support to overcome any challenges with services.

    • Facilitating choice and control over your NDIS services and supports

  • Capacity Building is indeed a crucial component of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan. It is one of the three primary support budgets, alongside Core Supports and Capital Supports.

The primary goal of Capacity Building is to help participants develop the skills and confidence needed to manage their NDIS plans independently. This funding is allocated across several categories, each designed to support different aspects of a participant’s life and goals. These categories include:

    1. Choice and Control: Training in planning and managing your plan.

    2. Daily Activity: Therapy aimed at building capacity to participate in daily activities.

    3. Employment: Support related to finding and maintaining employment.

    4. Health and Wellbeing: Exercise and health advice tailored to the participant’s needs.

    5. Home Living: Assistance in obtaining or retaining appropriate accommodation.

    6. Lifelong Learning: Support for transitioning from school to further education.

    7. Relationships: Strategies to improve social interactions and reduce behaviours of concern.

    8. Social and Community Participation: Skills development for engaging in social and recreational activities.

By focusing on these areas, Capacity Building aims to enhance long-term independence and improve the overall quality of life for participants

  • Support Coordination isn’t available to everyone. It’s typically funded for participants with more complex needs under the Capacity Building category, providing a set number of support hours annually. You can request Support Coordination during your planning meeting, at plan reviews, or if your circumstances change.

Recent NDIS updates now allow Self-Managed Participants to use their Core Budget flexibly to access Support Coordination. This means that Self-Managed Participants can now access Support Coordination from their Core Budget without needing dedicated ‘Support Coordination’ funding under their Capacity Building budget.

  • Recent NDIS updates now allow Self-Managed Participants to use their Core Budget flexibly to access Support Coordination. This means they can use their Core Budget for Support Coordination without needing specific funding for it under Capacity Building.

If you don’t have Support Coordination included in your NDIS plan, here’s what you can do:

Breathing Spaces can only provide services to:

    1. Participants with Support Coordination approved in their current NDIS plan.

    2. Self-Managed Participants who use their Core Funding for Support Coordination Services (aligned with recent NDIS Self-Management guidelines).

For Plan and Agency-Managed Participants, Support Coordination must be requested through a plan review. To do this:

    • Discuss with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) and Allied Health Providers.

    • Gather supporting evidence to present to the NDIA to justify the inclusion of Support Coordination in your plan.

  • Once you have Support Coordination, it won’t be funded indefinitely. This service is a Capacity Building Support, designed to decrease over time as you become more skilled and knowledgeable about NDIS processes. The duration for which Support Coordination is funded in your plan will depend on the complexity of your situation and the support network you have in place.

  • Yes, it does. Breathing Spaces Hub is a non-registered provider, which means we can only access your funding if it is self-managed, or plan managed. If your Support Coordination funding is agency-managed, we can help you submit a review request to change this.

  • NDIS registration can be a lengthy and costly process, and because of this some businesses choose to stay unregistered.

    Registered Providers:

    • Approved by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to deliver NDIS-funded services.

    • Must meet specific criteria, such as the NDIS Price Guide, and adhere to rules, regulations, and agreements.

    • Registration can be lengthy and costly, leading some businesses to remain unregistered.

    Non-Registered Providers:

    • Not approved by the NDIA but can still offer services.

    • Often chosen by businesses to avoid the lengthy and costly registration process.

    Choosing Providers:

    • Self-Managed or Plan-Managed: You can use both registered and non-registered providers.

    • Agency-Managed (NDIA-Managed): You can only use registered providers.

  • Support Coordination helps you implement your plan by connecting you with necessary supports and services. Support Coordinators:

    • Liaise with your Plan Manager to ensure supports and services are deemed reasonable and necessary under NDIS specifications.

Plan Management focuses on the financial aspects of your NDIS plan. Plan Managers:

    • Track funding types and spending rates.

    • Forecast funds to ensure they last the duration of your plan.

    • Process payments and retain receipts.

    • Provide snapshots of your plan usage at any time.
