NDIS Change Timeline

2026

• Changes to plan reassessments and funding begin.

• October: Changes to some participant budgets begin as plans are reassessed.

• December: New 90-day timeframe for submitting claims comes into effect.

2027

• February: New plan renewal process begins.

• April: New NDIS planning approach begins to be introduced.

• July: Further changes to provider registration.

• October: Changes to plan management arrangements begin.

2028

• January: Changes to NDIS access arrangements for new applicants begin.

• July: New approach to Support Coordination and connection services begins.

Changes to NDIS Support Budgets

From 1 October 2026, changes to some NDIS support budgets have started. This is part of the new NDIS laws.

The changes affect budgets for:

• Social, Economic and Community Participation

• Improved Daily Living Skills

What do you need to know?

• Not all supports in these categories will be affected.

• Budget reductions will occur when plans are reassessed or renewed between 1 October 2026 and 30 September 2027.

• If your current plan ends after 30 September 2027, your plan end date may be brought forward. The NDIS says it will provide 60 days notice if it intends to change your plan end date.

• Your reassessed or renewed plan will explain whether your budget has been reduced and by how much.

• Participants with high support needs can ask the NDIS to review their plan.

Your individual circumstances will determine how these changes affect you.

Thriving Kids

There has also been an important update to Thriving Kids.

Thriving Kids is a new service for children aged 8 and under with developmental delay and/or autism who have low to moderate support needs.

The first phase of Thriving Kids started on 1 October 2026, with services being introduced gradually across Australia.

Support may include therapy, family support, peer programs, playgroups and practical assistance.

Importantly, children currently accessing the NDIS are not immediately affected by the introduction of Thriving Kids. Changes to NDIS access and eligibility for children are not expected to begin until 1 January 2028.

What Does This Mean for You?

For now, continue using your current NDIS plan and supports as usual.
